The Minister for Infrastructure Development in the Solomon Islands, Manasseh Maelanga, recently engaged in discussions with Tuvalu’s Minister for Natural Resources Development, Sa’aga Talu Teafa, during the Honiara Ocean Summit. The conversation centered around potential collaboration and knowledge sharing regarding the International Shipping Registry (ISR) framework, which has already benefitted Tuvalu.
Maelanga highlighted the Solomon Islands government’s National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) policy, aimed at enhancing the maritime industry and fostering regional cooperation. He informed Teafa about the initiative taken two years ago to explore a shipping registry and the subsequent formation of a task force comprising officials from various government departments, including the Solomon Islands Maritime Authority and the Ministry of Finance.
“We believe that engaging in this shipping registry could provide substantial economic benefits for our nation,” noted Maelanga. Teafa acknowledged Tuvalu’s recent modifications to the MOU governing their shipping registry, expressing their willingness to support the Solomon Islands in exploring this beneficial venture.
Tuvalu’s Minister emphasized the economic gains seen through their shipping registry and committed to reporting the discussion to the relevant minister responsible for transport and communication. He welcomed deeper consultations on the matter, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation.
In support of this initiative, Pacific International Trust Company (PITCO) Limited has been contracted to provide a consultation service for the ISR system. Joining this registry would enhance the Solomon Islands’ access to global shipping markets, streamline processes for local shipping firms in establishing themselves in international waters, and attract foreign investment.
The Solomon Islands government assures its stakeholders and citizens of its commitment to developing a vibrant, safe, and environmentally responsible shipping industry, reinforcing the optimistic outlook for the country’s maritime future.
Combining insights from previously established maritime governance initiatives and collaborative discussions among Pacific nations, this dialogue reflects a proactive approach to addressing regional maritime challenges while fostering economic growth and sustainability in the maritime sector.
