Solomon Islands Make Waves with 2-0 Victory in OFC U-16 Championship!

The Solomon Islands commenced their OFC U-16 Women’s Championship journey with a convincing 2-0 win over Tahiti in Suva.

From the outset, the Solomon Islands established their dominance, with Gracester Kini netting a goal in the third minute, establishing a swift advantage for her team. Throughout the first half, Tahiti struggled under pressure and faced numerous defensive challenges.

Joy Toby, a forward for Solomon Islands, nearly extended the lead in the 19th minute, but her effort was skillfully saved by Tahitian goalkeeper Kalea Torohia. Despite several chances, including a close shot from Kini, the Solomon Islands couldn’t secure another goal until the latter part of the match.

In the second half, Kini continued to be a threat, though she failed to convert her attempts. Tahiti attempted to mount a comeback, with captain Maerehia Dehors unleashing a powerful shot that was well stopped by Solomon Islands’ goalkeeper Fiona Goroani.

Ultimately, Solomon Islands took advantage of a late free kick. Anna Ellen delivered a spot-on cross into the box that found Brenda Areni, who scored the second goal and sealed the win for her team.

The match concluded with the Solomon Islands looking impressive, while Tahiti must regroup ahead of their next fixture against New Zealand. Meanwhile, the Solomon Islands will take on New Caledonia, aiming to continue their successful start.
