Solomon Islands Kick Off Championship with Dominant Win Over Tahiti!

The Solomon Islands began their OFC U-16 Women’s Championship journey with a convincing 2-0 win over Tahiti in Suva.

From the onset, Solomon Islands established their dominance, with Gracester Kini netting a goal in the third minute, setting a vigorous pace for her teammates. During the first half, Tahiti struggled under pressure and encountered several defensive difficulties.

Joy Toby, a forward for Solomon Islands, almost extended the lead in the 19th minute, but her shot was expertly saved by Tahitian goalkeeper Kalea Torohia. Solomon Islands continued to create opportunities, including a near miss from Kini, who delivered a looping half volley that flew just wide of the goal. Despite numerous chances, they had to wait until the second half to solidify their advantage.

As the match progressed, Kina remained a constant threat but was unable to score again. Tahiti attempted to rally, highlighted by a strong effort from captain Maerehia Dehors, which was brilliantly saved by Solomon Islands’ goalkeeper Fiona Goroani.

The game shifted in favor of Solomon Islands late on when they took advantage of a free kick. Anna Ellen sent in a precise cross that located Brenda Areni, who successfully scored the second goal of the match, securing the win for her team.

As the match concluded, the Solomon Islands showcased a strong and unified performance, while Tahiti will need to regroup for their upcoming match against New Zealand. The Solomon Islands, on the other hand, are set to face New Caledonia, aiming to continue their winning momentum.
