The installation of twelve solar streetlights in the Waikerekere multi-ethnic community in Lami, provided by the NGO The Art of Living Foundation, is set to transform the lives of over 600 residents. This initiative emerged from a community consultation program, which was led by the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs alongside the Sugar Industry.
During the inauguration event, Rajesh Patel, a senior executive from The Art of Living Foundation, emphasized that the new streetlights would significantly improve the residents’ quality of life by mitigating issues related to inadequate lighting and offering a reliable renewable energy source. He noted the dual benefits of the lights, stating, “The solar lights reduce the community’s carbon footprint while ensuring safety during the night.”
Moreover, Patel highlighted how the lighting initiative would create safer pathways for individuals, particularly for children accessing facilities and for those commuting late at night. This project is part of a larger effort to bridge critical infrastructure gaps in underserved communities.
Maria Colati, the president of the Waikerekere committee, expressed that the solar lights represent more than just an upgrade in technology; they symbolize progress, sustainability, and the effective power of partnerships. She remarked, “These lights will not only enhance safety and security but also foster community activities, empower our children to study after dark, and create an environment that encourages connections and togetherness.”
Colati ended her speech with a call to action, reminding everyone present of the importance of collaboration in achieving brighter futures: “As we stand under the glow of these new solar lights, may we be reminded of the power of collaboration and the brightness we can achieve when we come together as one.”
This initiative not only enhances the safety and security of the Waikerekere community but also fosters a sense of togetherness and opportunity for growth and development among its residents.
In summary, the project promises to improve community life significantly while promoting sustainability, reinforcing the idea that collaborative efforts can lead to meaningful enhancements in local infrastructure and welfare.
