Mark Halabe, the managing director of Mark One Apparel, has highlighted the untapped potential of solar energy as a vital solution for decarbonizing the world. In a recent interview with The Fiji Times online portal, he urged corporate leaders and individuals to embrace renewable energy sources, particularly solar, rather than waiting for government intervention.

Halabe emphasized Fiji’s abundance of sunlight, stating, “For Fiji, we are blessed with a lot of sunshine.” He proposed that enhancing our renewable energy landscape, primarily through solar energy, is essential. While hydroelectric power currently meets about 40 percent of the nation’s energy needs, he believes significant advancements can be made by focusing on solar solutions.

Additionally, Halabe mentioned the possibility of harnessing energy from ocean waves, citing emerging technologies that use wave action to generate power. He underscored that pursuing these renewable options is crucial for Fiji’s energy strategy.

As Fiji prepares for COP29, Halabe acknowledged the country’s call for international financial support to combat climate change-related impacts, noting that while Fiji contributes minimally to global climate change, the nation must also improve its own sustainability efforts. He pointed out the importance of taking proactive steps to address environmental challenges, emphasizing that humanity’s future is intertwined with nature’s survival.

In light of his message, it’s clear that active engagement from both leaders and individuals is essential to accelerate the transition toward renewable energy and protect our planet for future generations. By prioritizing solar energy and other renewables, there’s potential not only for environmental rejuvenation but also for economic growth and sustainability in Fiji.

In summary, Halabe’s call to action serves as a hopeful reminder of the possibilities that lie ahead if we unite in our efforts to adopt renewable energy solutions.
