Beyond the headline

Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa staff have led a clean-up effort after Tropical Cyclone Vaianu, the resort said in a statement, reporting no major damage from the Category 3 storm and thanking guests and team members for their composure and commitment.

In its brief release, the resort said staff “took part in a recent clean-up activity” following the cyclone and praised guests “who stayed calm and made the most and wet weather activities on offer.” The resort added: “We are happy to share that Sofitel Fiji has come through Category 3 Cyclone Vaianu with no major damage.” Management also singled out staff who remained at the property during the storm, commending “the commitment from their team members who chose to remain at the hotel instead of going home to their families, ensuring the safety of guests was paramount.”

Cyclone Vaianu was classified as a Category 3 event, a designation that typically denotes destructive winds and heavy rainfall capable of causing significant local damage. The resort’s assertion that there was no major damage is therefore notable for travellers and the local tourism sector, indicating the property escaped the worst physical impacts that can accompany such storms.

The staff-led clean-up is the latest step in restoring normal operations at the resort. While the statement did not detail the scale of the clean-up or specify timelines for reopening any affected facilities, Sofitel’s emphasis on the rapid response by team members suggests efforts are already under way to clear debris, assess any minor damage and resume guest services as soon as it is safe to do so.

Resort employees remaining on site during severe weather is a common emergency procedure in hotel operations, ensuring guests are supported and that critical systems are monitored. Sofitel’s public acknowledgement of staff who stayed through the cyclone highlights those emergency measures and the human element behind guest safety during extreme weather events.

The statement also served to reassure existing and prospective guests that the property had weathered the storm without major structural harm. As Fiji’s tourism industry contends with seasonal cyclones, such updates from resorts play a key role in shaping travel plans and confidence among visitors and travel operators.

This account is the latest development related to Cyclone Vaianu’s impact on Fiji’s hospitality sector. Sofitel’s message focuses on gratitude and recovery: thanking calm guests, praising staff dedication and confirming that, as of its statement, the resort had come through the Category 3 cyclone without major damage and was mobilising staff to clean up and restore the property.
