Viliame Takayawa, the acting general secretary of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), has confirmed his candidacy for the party’s substantive general secretary position, along with four other applicants. Takayawa shared that discussions concerning the appointment occurred during a recent SODELPA Management Board meeting.

As he currently holds the acting role, Takayawa mentioned that the formal appointment should occur later this month, as the party seeks to fill other key positions, such as that of the treasurer, which remains unoccupied. When asked about the other candidates, he refrained from providing details, stating that announcements would be made in due course.

SODELPA’s push for a new general secretary aligns with their objectives outlined in May when they declared the opening for the position. This role is essential for the administrative and spokesperson functions of the party, responsible for managing operations and national campaign strategies.

The context of these developments ties back to significant internal discussions within SODELPA, where there have been challenges and scrutiny regarding leadership roles and party dynamics. The current situation presents an opportunity for the party to strengthen its internal governance and reaffirm its commitment to collaboration, particularly in light of the upcoming 2026 elections.

This period of transition could potentially cultivate a more unified front for SODELPA, enhancing its strategies and reinforcing alliances within the coalition government, ultimately benefiting Fiji as it prepares for future political challenges.
