The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) has reaffirmed its backing for Viliame Gavoka as the Deputy Prime Minister, despite him stepping down as the party’s leader. General Secretary Viliame Takayawa emphasized during a statement to The Fiji Times that the allocation of government positions is under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister, as outlined in the Coalition Agreement.

Takayawa remarked, “It is only fair that the position be given to Hon Gavoka as he was the party leader for the 2022 national election.” He affirmed that SODELPA’s commitment to the coalition remains strong, highlighting that their actions are guided by principles of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity.

The party referenced its internal governance structure, with its constitution serving as a basis for equitable leadership, particularly citing sections 16.1 and 16.2, which clarify the roles of party and parliamentary leaders. Takayawa also reiterated the significance of collaboration with coalition partners to foster national unity, aligning with SODELPA’s commitment to advance indigenous rights while promoting a multicultural Fiji.

Reflecting on SODELPA’s crucial role in the establishment of the government in 2022, the party expressed its dedication to unity and development. “Acting in good faith, we gave Hon Sitiveni Rabuka the mandate to lead the government, ensuring that the voices of our voters were honored,” Takayawa stated.

As Fiji approaches the 2026 elections, SODELPA is calling on its citizens to unite in their mission for stability and progress. The party expresses confidence in its leadership and promises a government that prioritizes national interests, unity, and the creation of opportunities for all Fijians. In summary, SODELPA’s reaffirmation of support for Gavoka signifies a commitment to coalition stability and a hopeful future for Fiji’s political landscape.

The developments highlight SODELPA’s ongoing efforts to engage constructively within the coalition, reinforcing the importance of trust and communication in governance. As the political climate evolves, SODELPA’s focus on unity and collaboration may present a pathway for a resilient governance model beneficial for Fiji and its people.
