The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to Viliame Gavoka as Deputy Prime Minister, despite his recent resignation as party leader. SODELPA’s General Secretary, Viliame Takayawa, emphasized that the distribution of government positions is the responsibility of the Prime Minister, in accordance with the Coalition Agreement.
Takayawa noted that it is fair for Gavoka to continue in his role, given that he was the party leader during the 2022 national elections. SODELPA is dedicated to ensuring the coalition’s effective operation, maintaining a focus on principles of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity.
The party’s constitution supports its internal governance, clearly delineating the roles of party and parliamentary leaders to ensure equitable representation. Takayawa reiterated the importance of collaboration among coalition partners to foster unity, advocating for the rights of indigenous communities while promoting a multicultural Fiji.
Reflecting on SODELPA’s pivotal role in forming the current government, Takayawa reaffirmed the party’s commitment to acting in good faith and honoring the mandate given to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. With the 2026 elections approaching, SODELPA is calling on Fijians to join its mission for stability and progress.
“This is the leadership Fijians can trust—one that prioritizes the nation, seeks unity, and creates opportunities for every citizen,” Takayawa remarked, expressing optimism for a future aligned with the aspirations of the Fijian populace.
The ongoing support for Gavoka reflects SODELPA’s broader strategy to maintain a stable coalition, fostering trust and collaboration that could lead to significant advancements for Fiji as it navigates evolving political dynamics.
Overall, SODELPA’s renewed support for Gavoka reflects its commitment to a governance model focused on inclusivity and cooperative progress, creating a hopeful atmosphere for Fiji’s political future.
