The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) has firmly expressed its backing for Viliame Gavoka in his role as Deputy Prime Minister, despite his stepping down as the party leader. SODELPA’s General Secretary, Viliame Takayawa, emphasized that the distribution of government positions lies within the Prime Minister’s authority, in accordance with the Coalition Agreement.

During a recent communication with The Fiji Times, Takayawa stated, “It is only fair that the position be given to Hon Gavoka as he was the party leader for the 2022 national election.” He underscored the party’s commitment to maintaining a functional coalition, focusing on principles of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity.

SODELPA pointed to its constitution as a basis for strong internal governance, specifically citing sections that define the roles of both the party and parliamentary leaders to ensure equitable representation. Takayawa reiterated that collaboration with coalition partners is key to fostering national unity and progress.

Reflecting on SODELPA’s significant role in the formation of the current government in 2022, the party reaffirmed its dedication to acting in good faith and honoring the mandate given to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. As the party looks forward to the upcoming 2026 elections, it is calling on all Fijians to unite behind its mission for stability, progress, and shared prosperity.

“This leadership prioritizes the nation, seeks unity, and creates opportunities for every citizen,” Takayawa declared, inviting citizens to join SODELPA in building a future that aligns with the aspirations of the people. This optimistic outlook suggests that SODELPA is not only focused on its internal challenges but is also committed to nurturing a stable and inclusive governance model that benefits all of Fiji.

As developments in coalition politics continue to unfold, SODELPA’s focus on unity and collective progress reflects a hopeful future for Fiji’s political landscape, where collaboration and inclusivity can drive substantial advancements for the nation.
