The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) management board has reaffirmed Viliame Gavoka’s position as Deputy Prime Minister within the Coalition Government, ensuring continuity in leadership that honors the Burebasaga confederacy. This resolution was reached during a meeting in Suva, where board members emphasized the importance of stability in governance.
Despite discussions regarding potential leadership changes, the board concluded that maintaining Gavoka in his role is crucial for representing the interests of the Burebasaga, as the party follows a historical framework that promotes equitable representation among Fiji’s three key confederacies: Tovata, Kubuna, and Burebasaga. This framework aims to balance power and foster collaboration within the government.
In addition to reaffirming Gavoka’s position, the SODELPA board discussed four key agenda items. These include the establishment of a committee to consult on electoral law adjustments, preparing a presentation for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and planning for the Annual General Meeting set for the end of March.
The management team reiterated their commitment to effective governance and the importance of unity among coalition partners. Their aim is to cultivate a climate of inclusivity, especially as Fiji gears up for the 2026 elections. SODELPA is encouraging citizen engagement in their mission, reflecting a proactive approach to national stability and progress.
This decision to retain consistent leadership not only honors SODELPA’s traditions but also paints a hopeful picture for Fiji’s political landscape, where stable governance can lead to improved collaboration and trust among coalition partners. The ongoing efforts to address electoral laws and foster reconciliation further demonstrate SODELPA’s dedication to the nation’s democratic processes.
