The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) has officially reprimanded its general secretary, Viliame Takayawa, following his critical remarks regarding a recent trade mission to Tonga led by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica. SODELPA’s leader, Aseri Radrodro, instructed Takayawa to delete the social media post that contradicted the party’s stance and jeopardized its alliance with the Coalition Government.
This move is a response to concerns raised by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who expressed alarm over what he termed “disturbing behavior” within SODELPA’s leadership, hinting at a potential reassessment of the Coalition agreement if such issues persist. In an effort to mend the alliance, Radrodro reaffirmed SODELPA’s commitment to maintaining a cooperative relationship within the coalition, emphasizing the need for sensitivity and prudent communication among party members, especially those in leadership positions.
Radrodro communicated his directive clearly, noting that it was important to align personal opinions with the collective responsibility they hold as part of the coalition. He stated that the issue will be discussed in more detail at the upcoming SODELPA working committee meeting, adhering to the party’s constitution and protocols governing internal matters.
Despite efforts to clarify Takayawa’s comments as personal opinions, Rabuka maintained that as general secretary, his words reflect the party’s official stance. Concerns have also been raised about previous complaints against the Minister for Education, Radrodro, contributing to Rabuka’s growing dissatisfaction with the party’s direction.
While the political climate remains tense, there is potential for positive evolution within the coalition as both parties are urged to engage in open and constructive communication to reach common goals. A commitment to collaboration could pave the way for enhanced governance and a more stable political landscape in Fiji, reinforcing the aspirations of the Fijian populace for unity and effective leadership.
The current situation presents an opportunity for SODELPA to demonstrate its resolve and commitment to good governance, fostering trust and collaboration essential for a functioning coalition that serves the interests of all citizens.
