The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) is making strides to engage the youth of Fiji, as it plans to offer 10 young individuals the chance to contest in the upcoming general election. This announcement was made by party leader and Education Minister Aseri Radrodro during the SODELPA Youth Annual General Meeting, where over 300 youths gathered to discuss future endeavours.
Minister Radrodro emphasized the importance of education, discipline, and leadership, advocating for proper educational and employment pathways as core priorities for the party’s youth initiatives. He highlighted significant achievements by the Coalition government, such as the writing off of student loans and the provision of scholarships aimed at ensuring that young Fiji citizens can access quality education and develop lifelong learning skills.
Radrodro further expressed SODELPA’s commitment to involving youths in decision-making processes and leadership roles, stating, “We are giving 10 seats to our young people to ensure they are part of our journey towards 2026.” This initiative reflects SODELPA’s overarching mission to promote equal opportunities and engage young voters, resonating with a broader strategy of invigorating grassroots participation in the political landscape.
Additionally, he urged the assembled youths to support SODELPA, underscoring the party’s long-standing history of over 20 years and its ongoing commitment to creating equitable opportunities in areas such as education and employment. During the meeting, he encouraged the youth to remain law-abiding citizens, avoid drug involvement, and assist one another in completing their educational goals.
The event also saw the election of new board members; Ratu Tevita Momoedonu assumed the presidency, alongside Vice Presidents Angeline Tikoitoga and Joshua Gaunavinaka. The strong turnout at the AGM signifies a robust interest among party members in shaping the future trajectory of both SODELPA and Fiji as a whole.
These encouraging developments come at a critical moment as SODELPA prepares for the upcoming 2025 Municipal Elections and the 2026 General Elections, where the party aims to address pressing voter concerns and foster meaningful change within the political arena. This focus on youth involvement and educational initiatives plants seeds of hope for a transformative future in Fiji’s governance and political engagement.
