The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) has expressed its unwavering support for Viliame Gavoka as Deputy Prime Minister, despite his recent departure from the party leadership. General Secretary Viliame Takayawa articulated this stance, emphasizing that the assignment of governmental roles is ultimately the domain of the Prime Minister, in accordance with the Coalition Agreement.

In a recent statement, Takayawa remarked, “Given that Hon Gavoka was the party leader during the 2022 national election, it is only fair that he retains this position.” He highlighted SODELPA’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the coalition operates smoothly, affirming its dedication to fairness, transparency, and inclusivity within its governance structure.

The party referenced its constitutional framework, particularly Sections 16.1 and 16.2, which clearly delineate the responsibilities of the party leader and Parliamentary leader. This lays the groundwork for balanced representation and encourages collaborative governance.

As SODELPA continues to work closely with its coalition partners, Takayawa noted that fostering national unity remains essential, aligning with the party’s mission to advocate for indigenous rights and promote a multicultural Fiji. Reflecting on their critical role in forming the current government, SODELPA emphasized a united front and a shared vision for Fiji’s future.

Looking ahead to the 2026 elections, SODELPA invites all Fijians to join in their mission of progress, stability, and unity, declaring a commitment to leadership that prioritizes the nation’s interests and promotes opportunities for all citizens.

This resiliency within the coalition is a positive beacon for Fiji, encouraging an atmosphere of cooperation that can lead to significant national advancements. As SODELPA seeks to uphold its values and foster a strong coalition, there remains hope for a prosperous and united future for Fiji, built on shared aspirations and mutual respect within the government structure.
