The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) has reaffirmed its strong support for Viliame Gavoka as Deputy Prime Minister, despite his recent resignation from the party leadership. SODELPA’s General Secretary, Viliame Takayawa, emphasized that the appointment of government positions falls under the Prime Minister’s prerogative, as outlined in the Coalition Agreement.
Takayawa stated, “It is only fair that the position be given to Hon Gavoka as he was the party leader for the 2022 national election.” This assertion highlights SODELPA’s commitment to a collaborative and effective coalition that prioritizes principles of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity.
The party’s internal governance structure is robust, with its constitution clearly defining the roles of party leader and Parliamentary leader to ensure balanced representation and equitable governance. Takayawa reiterated the importance of working closely with coalition partners to promote national unity, advocate for indigenous rights, and foster a multicultural Fiji. He underscored the party’s dedication to honoring the mandate given to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, reflecting on SODELPA’s significant role in the formation of the current government.
As Fiji approaches the 2026 elections, SODELPA calls on all Fijians to unite in their mission for stability, progress, and unity, proclaiming, “This is the leadership Fijians can trust — one that prioritizes the nation, seeks unity, and creates opportunities for every citizen.”
This commitment not only solidifies SODELPA’s resolve to maintain stability within the coalition but also presents an opportunity for collaborative governance that could lead to significant advancements for the nation. Their focus on inclusivity and mutual respect among coalition partners demonstrates a hopeful political landscape, where collective aspirations can foster a prosperous future for all Fijians.
In summary, SODELPA’s ongoing support for Gavoka and its emphasis on cooperation within the coalition create a promising outlook for Fiji’s political future, highlighting the party’s commitment to building a unified and progressive nation.
