The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) has publicly reconfirmed its support for Viliame Gavoka, who continues in his role as Deputy Prime Minister despite stepping down as party leader. SODELPA’s General Secretary, Viliame Takayawa, clarified that the appointment of government positions is determined by the Prime Minister, as per the Coalition Agreement.

Takayawa noted that allowing Gavoka to maintain his position is a matter of fairness, given that he served as the party leader during the 2022 national elections. He emphasized that SODELPA is committed to ensuring the coalition operates effectively with guiding principles of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity.

In his statements, Takayawa highlighted the party’s strong internal governance structure supported by its constitution, which clearly delineates the responsibilities of both party and parliamentary leaders. This structure is essential for maintaining balanced representation and effective governance.

SODELPA also reiterated the importance of collaboration with coalition partners to promote national unity, advocate for indigenous rights, and cultivate a multicultural Fiji. Reflecting on its key role in the current government’s formation, the party expressed its ongoing commitment to honoring the mandate given to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

As the nation approaches the 2026 elections, SODELPA is calling on all Fijians to join its mission aimed at achieving progress, stability, and unity. Takayawa stressed the kind of leadership that prioritizes the nation, seeks unity, and creates opportunities for every citizen, embodying a hopeful vision for the future of Fiji.

This reaffirmation not only demonstrates SODELPA’s commitment to stability within its coalition but also opens avenues for fostering collaborative governance that can lead to significant advancements for the nation. The party’s dedication to inclusivity and mutual respect among coalition partners suggests a promising political landscape, where collective aspirations can catalyze a prosperous future for all Fijians.

In summary, SODELPA’s ongoing support for Gavoka and emphasis on collaborative governance create a hopeful outlook, promoting a unified Fiji as it navigates the complexities of its political future.
