Social media has proven to be an effective tool for fostering community solidarity and supporting those in need, according to Hosanna Kabakoro, co-founder of the South Pacific Foundation for Sustainable Rural Development. Established in 2022, the foundation focuses on improving water infrastructure for rural and maritime villages, implementing projects in areas such as Somosomo, Taveuni, Lamini, Lomanikoro, and Naweni.
Kabakoro highlighted the organization’s approach of utilizing social media to mobilize support. After a call for donations was made on Boxing Day, the response from the community was immediate and overwhelming. Within hours, they received contributions, including four boxes of supplies from Bree Whitaker, allowing them to prepare and distribute 120 packs of essential goods to areas like Saint Andrews and Korovuto by the end of the day.
Despite challenges, such as flooded roads affecting access to some communities, Kabakoro emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure that all recipients received equal rations. The enthusiastic response from the Fijian community showcased the power of collective action, with many individuals eager to help but unsure where to direct their efforts.
Notably, influencer Shania Singh mobilized her followers to raise over $3,000, which was used to prepare over a hundred full packs containing essential items like flour, rice, and household products. The majority of donations came from young people aged 18 to 35, with Kabakoro noting the significant role of platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook in engaging this demographic.
As families return home from evacuation centers, volunteers remain dedicated to delivering rations to those unable to reach distribution points. Currently, the foundation has 35 packs of supplies ready at the District Office in Lautoka, with plans to acquire more essential items.
The organization’s efforts are supported not only by local community members but also by various corporate sponsors, including Aqua Pacific, Aqua Safe, and Hilton Fiji. Additionally, a New Zealand influencer contributed to fundraising efforts for necessary supplies in Korovuto.
Kabakoro stressed the importance of collaboration with local authorities to coordinate assistance and ensure effective resource distribution, preventing overlaps in aid provision.
This initiative exemplifies the potential of community spirit and the positive impact of social media when used for altruistic purposes, bringing hope and assistance to those who need it most.
In summary, the South Pacific Foundation has leveraged social media’s power to unite and mobilize support for vulnerable communities, showcasing a strong sense of solidarity and commitment to helping others during difficult times.
