Social Media Hoax: Police Respond to Coconut Juice Claims

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu has called on the public to exercise caution when sharing information on social media platforms. This warning comes in light of a widely circulated screenshot that falsely claimed police had arrested a group of boys for allegedly selling green coconut juice purported to be laced with drugs.

According to police officials, there has been no formal report related to such an incident. The image circulating on social media depicts an officer detaining boys in the Namadi Heights area near Suva. However, eyewitness accounts suggest that the boys were actually caught stealing coconuts and breadfruits from nearby homes rather than engaging in the activities described in the post.

“We urge the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that could incite unnecessary alarm,” emphasized ACP Driu, noting that the police will communicate significant trends or incidents as they arise.

It’s essential for communities to remain vigilant and rely on verified sources of information, especially in today’s digital age where misinformation can spread rapidly. By fostering a culture of responsible sharing, we can help maintain community safety and trust.

In a broader context, this incident reinforces the importance of accurate communication and the role of law enforcement in dispelling rumors. With the cooperation of the public, the police can ensure that misinformation does not overshadow the real issues at hand and that community members stay informed based on facts.
