A 26-year-old woman has changed her plea to not guilty after facing charges for allegedly circulating an image of her toddler nephew holding a glass of beer on social media. Merini Talekinona appeared in the Nausori Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where her initial expectation for a sentence shifted after her new lawyer, Sanjay Kumar, notified the court of her plea change.
Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi inquired about the reasoning behind this sudden shift, particularly since the charge is categorized as a misdemeanor. Initially, she had planned to impose a modest $200 fine, considering that Talekinona already served two days in prison related to the case.
As the case continues, it will now extend to the following year, with Talekinona maintaining her not-guilty stance. Typically, individuals in similar circumstances are granted bail, and she secured hers by having her aunt serve as a surety, bonding her on a non-cash bail bond of $100. Consequently, Talekinona is required to report to the Lautoka Police Station each Friday between 6am and 6pm. The case has been adjourned to August 11 for scheduling a hearing.
