President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has stressed the critical necessity for responsible social media behavior, emphasizing the adverse effects of inflammatory comments and trolling on democracy and political engagement. Speaking at the opening of Parliament in Suva, he highlighted that online hostility and spread of misinformation hamper constructive dialogue within the community.

“The exploitation of people’s circumstances online is demeaning. It’s crucial that the information shared on these platforms is accurate and promotes the common good, rather than stoking divisiveness among our people,” Ratu Naiqama remarked. He appealed to both individuals and social media companies to foster a more respectful and constructive online environment, urging everyone to take personal responsibility for their contributions to online discussions.

The President’s call for civility aligns with growing public concerns about harmful online behaviors, especially following tragic incidents linked to social media. Recently, opposition voices have raised alarms about the government blocking dissenting citizens on its official Facebook page, further complicating the landscape of online discourse. This reality emphasizes the larger context of accountability and the necessity of constructive criticism in fostering a vibrant democracy.

The urgency of addressing misinformation and hostility has been echoed by legal experts and organizations like the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement, which has been vocal regarding the toxic environments proliferating across forums like ‘ChatFiji.’ These platforms have drawn criticism for hosting derogatory content that fosters online bullying and harassment, particularly against marginalized groups including women and the LGBTQ+ community.

Promoting accuracy and respect in online conversations is essential, as highlighted by President Ratu Naiqama, who believes that such efforts could cultivate a more enlightening and inclusive political discourse in Fiji. Encouraging social media companies to enhance measures against harmful content could lead to healthier online interactions.

In a hopeful turn, ongoing discussions around improving online conduct reflect a growing commitment among Fijians to build a more respectful and safe online space. With a unified approach towards nurturing civil dialogue and combating misinformation, the prospect of a more engaged and responsible citizenry is within reach.
