Australia’s national football coach Tony Popovic has announced a 26-man squad featuring six uncapped players ahead of the critical 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Indonesia and China. This strategic selection comes as the Socceroos aim to secure their position in Group C, where they currently sit second, nine points behind Japan.

Among the new additions to the squad are three central defenders – Kai Trewin, Alex Grant, and Nectarios Triantis – filling in for regulars Harry Souttar and Hayden Matthews, who are out for the season due to injuries. Goalkeeper Mat Ryan is expected to start for his 97th and 98th caps, although Joe Gauci’s hip injury has led to the inclusion of uncapped goalkeepers Paul Izzo and Tom Glover in the lineup.

In addition to the new defenders, A-League midfielder Ryan Teague also makes his debut in this selection, adding depth to the team’s midfield options, where he will compete with Aiden O’Neill. Veteran striker Adam Taggart returns to the fold, while Mitch Duke and promising teenager Nestory Irankunda were notably omitted from this squad.

Popovic acknowledges the stakes of these upcoming matches, emphasizing the importance of preparation and focus. “It’s been a whirlwind start to my tenure, and we’ve used the time since November to thoroughly assess our program. We understand what’s at stake and we’re eager to cement our position in the group’s qualifying spots,” he stated.

With only four games remaining, the Socceroos must secure victories against Indonesia in Sydney and China in Hangzhou to enhance their chances of automatic qualification. In the event they fall short, there remains an opportunity to qualify through a fourth round and the intercontinental playoffs.

This exciting blend of experience and youth in the squad reflects Australia’s determination to fortify their chances for the World Cup, with anticipation building as the team prepares for these decisive clashes. Fans are hopeful that these selections will energize the squad’s performance, aiming for a strong showing on the international stage.
