From the village of Dravo Bau in Tailevu, Fiji, Atunaisa Naivaluwaqa Robanakadavu is pursuing his dream in aviation at just 21 years old. As a final-year student at Fiji National University (FNU) studying for a Certificate IV in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Atunaisa has gained invaluable experience through a six-month attachment with Fiji Airways and is currently undertaking on-the-job training with Island Hoppers.
Atunaisa’s passion for aircraft began at an early age. “I’ve always been intrigued by aircraft,” he shared, expressing his gratitude for having the opportunity to not only work on aircraft but also help maintain and repair them. His entry into the program was competitive — only 30 students were accepted, making his achievement a source of pride.
He describes the aviation industry as one defined not just by technical skills but also by teamwork and camaraderie. “Both Fiji Airways and Island Hoppers taught me that family isn’t just about blood; it’s about the bonds you build through work,” he emphasized, highlighting the motivational atmosphere at these companies.
Specializing in mechanical systems, Atunaisa feels a natural affinity for the hands-on challenges of aircraft maintenance. “I chose mechanical because I love working with the moving, physical parts of the aircraft,” he said, noting that this area suits his learning style.
While studying locally has its advantages, he dreams of experiencing training abroad, where he believes better facilities and exposure await. “Fiji is my home, but from what I’ve heard, training overseas often means better facilities and more exposure to live aircraft,” Atunaisa remarked.
With the recovery of Fiji’s aviation industry following the pandemic, he holds optimism for future developments. “We’ve seen great progress with more flights and new aircraft joining the Fiji Airways fleet,” he said, while also stressing the often-overlooked role of engineers who ensure the safety and functionality of those flights.
Atunaisa’s journey embodies a broader narrative of Fiji’s push toward enhancing local talent in the aviation sector, as evidenced by significant investments in training facilities like the Fiji Airways Aviation Academy. Recent advancements at the academy, including new simulators, underline the commitment to providing top-tier training for pilots and engineers, reinforcing Fiji’s position as a regional hub for aviation excellence.
