The Southern Billiards and Snooker Association held its first rankings tournament in three years in Nausori, which attracted a remarkable turnout of 51 players, including a notable 17-year-old competitor. This two-day event heralds a revival of competitive snooker in the region after a significant break, largely influenced by the challenges from the pandemic and previous organizational hurdles.

Association president David Ratnam expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the event’s sponsors, Narere Buses and Tigers Snooker Club. He particularly acknowledged Deepak Jai Ram, the venue host, for facilitating this event within an alcohol-free environment, making it a safe space for younger players to compete—a crucial aspect for fostering the growth of the sport in Fiji.

The participation was diverse, with players from both the southern and western divisions, indicating a shift in inclusivity as opposed to previous tournaments that restricted participants. This change aligns with Ratnam’s vision of expanding snooker’s reach and enhancing its competitive scene.

Looking ahead, Ratnam laid out plans for the association to host four rankings tournaments throughout the year, with the current event marking the first of many. This initiative not only aims to provide players with opportunities to showcase their skills but also signifies a commitment to rejuvenating snooker in Fiji.

Overall, the successful turnout and positive feedback from the tournament highlight a bright future for snooker in the region, inspired by a new generation of players and a revitalized organizational framework. With continued support and a focus on youth development, the sport is poised for growth, creating a beacon of hope for snooker enthusiasts in Fiji.
