“Saturday Night Live” made its highly anticipated return this weekend, humorously reflecting on President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office during its cold open. Cast member James Austin Johnson reprised his well-known impersonation of Trump, sharing the set with Mikey Day who made his debut as White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller.

In the skit, Day’s Miller celebrated the milestone by presenting Trump with numerous executive orders, prompting Johnson’s Trump to boast about the “147 executive orders” he had already signed, covering topics as varied as “banning paper straws” and “defunding PBS.” The comedic commentary took a light-hearted turn with one order suggesting it should be socially acceptable for older men to date significantly younger women, dubbed the “Belichick Law,” referencing the age difference between football coach Bill Belichick and his girlfriend.

Other humorous orders included making the New York Times game “Connections” easier and even “outlawing ghosts,” culminating in a light-hearted critique of economic language by renaming “recession” to “recess,” with Trump exclaiming, “America, get ready for a historically long recess!”

The episode was hosted by Quinta Brunson of “Abbott Elementary” fame, and featured musical guest Benson Boone. As “SNL” wraps up its landmark 50th season, fans can look forward to two more episodes, with Walton Goggins as the host next week and Scarlett Johansson taking the stage for the season finale.

This playful take by “SNL” highlights the show’s enduring influence in satirizing political moments and engaging audiences with comedic reflections on contemporary politics. The choice of subjects showcased in the skit serves to remind the audience of the cultural and political dialogues that permeate through both entertainment and real-life events. Such moments of humor can foster a greater sense of connection amid the often serious political landscape.

As always, “SNL” remains a platform for not just laughs, but also for discussing and reflecting on the state of affairs in a light-hearted manner.
