Concerns have risen among schools and residents in Davuilevu after the incineration of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine at the Dignified Crematorium, which took place under heavy police and military security. The operation, conducted on Monday, created a substantial amount of thick black smoke that adversely affected local businesses and nearby educational institutions, including Bhawani Dayal and Nasinu Muslim Primary Schools.
Reports from teachers indicate that students experienced headaches and respiratory discomfort, leading to the distribution of masks within the schools. Arista Beci, a teacher at Bhawani Dayal, noted, “Even teachers felt uneasy.” Subsequently, some parents chose to pick up their children early out of health concerns. Mohammed Jalim, the headmaster of Nasinu Muslim Primary, confirmed that his school provided masks for safety and informed the Ministry of Education about the issue.
Rajesh Kumar, the Chief Executive Officer of Nausori Town Council, expressed strong disapproval regarding the lack of advance notice about the incineration operation, highlighting serious concerns for residents exposed to the harmful smoke. In response, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro recommended that parents evaluate the situation and determine the safety of sending their children to school during this period, adding that teachers and students should take necessary precautions if complications arise.
This incident bears similarities to previous operations where measures were taken to protect the community during drug disposals. Senior Superintendent of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe has previously reassured the public regarding safety protocols during such events, illustrating the commitment of law enforcement to protect public health.
