Concerns are growing over the ongoing Vunato dump fire, which continues to release thick smoke that affects nearby communities and businesses in Lautoka. Narayan Reddy, president of the Lautoka City Ratepayers and Residents Association, has called for accountability, insisting that someone must be held responsible for the recurrent health hazards posed by these fires. He was quoted expressing frustration over the lack of action regarding what he described as an annual problem, emphasizing the need for a full inquiry by the Lautoka City Council to identify those responsible for igniting the fire.
The situation is particularly alarming as local residents, especially vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly, have reported serious health issues, including breathing difficulties due to the smoke. The presence of toxic smoke in the air has raised significant public health concerns among community members, who demand urgent action from local authorities.
Taitusi Rasoki Kata, chairperson of the Lautoka City Council’s board of special administrators, stated that despite ongoing efforts to combat the fire, the council faces challenges due to unfavorable weather conditions and the fire’s underground location, which complicates firefighting efforts. He acknowledged that they were in the process of seeking innovative solutions, such as the construction of observation towers manned by workers to quickly report smoke sightings from within the landfill.
The Vunato landfill has a troubling history of fires, underscoring the pressing need for sustainable waste management practices in the region. It processes an average of 75.5 tonnes of waste daily, leading to concerns over its operational capacity and effectiveness. The government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, is exploring potential new landfill sites and enhanced waste management strategies to mitigate the ongoing issues at Vunato.
