Concerns have emerged from schools and residents near the Dignified Crematorium in Davuilevu following the incineration of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine under heavy police and military security. The operation, which took place on Monday, produced thick black smoke that significantly impacted local businesses and educational facilities, including Bhawani Dayal and Nasinu Muslim Primary Schools.

Teachers reported that students experienced headaches and respiratory issues, prompting the distribution of masks. “Even teachers felt uneasy,” said Arista Beci, a teacher at Bhawani Dayal. Some parents opted to pick up their children early due to health concerns. The headmaster of Nasinu Muslim Primary, Mohammed Jalim, confirmed that his school provided masks and alerted the Ministry of Education regarding the situation.

Nausori Town Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Rajesh Kumar, criticized the lack of prior communication about the operation, expressing deep concern for residents exposed to the hazardous smoke. Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro advised parents to assess whether to send their children to school during this time and emphasized that teachers and students should take appropriate measures if concerns arise during school hours.

This incident has drawn parallels to similar past operations where protocols were implemented to safeguard the community during drug disposals. Senior Superintendent of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe has previously assured the public of safety during drug incinerations, highlighting the commitment of law enforcement agencies to public health and safety.

The ongoing destruction of methamphetamine not only aims to eliminate a significant threat to the community but also reinforces the collective effort of Fijian authorities to combat drug trafficking. Operations like these symbolize a hopeful approach towards a healthier and safer environment for all citizens.

The collaboration among various governmental ministries and law enforcement agencies underlines a united front against drug-related crime in Fiji. With continued attention to safety and effective communication, the potential health impacts on local residents and students should be addressed efficiently, ensuring a clearer path towards community well-being.
