For 86-year-old Vanavasa Vone, the essence of Christmas revolves around family, love, and the spirit of sharing rather than the scale of the celebration. This holiday season, Vone is nestled in the warmth of his home in Raiwaqa, surrounded by his beloved children and grandchildren, feeling profoundly fortunate to share this time with those he cherishes most.

Reflecting on the past, Vone reminisces, “Back then, Christmas was big. The whole village would gather, everyone cooked together, everyone shared food.” However, he acknowledges that over the years, the once-grand gatherings have diminished, giving way to more intimate family celebrations. Despite this shift, Vone firmly believes that the true meaning of Christmas has not changed.

“The gathering may be small now, but the love is still there. People still share, people still care — and that’s what Christmas is about,” he shares, emphasizing the enduring values of compassion and connection.

One of his grandchildren, who has been working on Kokomo Island, expresses the significance of being home this year. “I was so happy because not every year we are here, and it’s just great to be here for my grandfather,” she notes, highlighting the importance of family bonds during the festive season.

As Fiji transforms, Vone expresses hope that the younger generations will continue to uphold the cherished values of Christmas: love, generosity, and togetherness. As he enjoys the company of his family, it’s evident that these sentiments remain vibrant and alive, reinforcing that the heart of Christmas continues to thrive, no matter the size of the gathering.
