Cycle tourists Merryl Park and Ian Flux from New Zealand have been exploring the picturesque landscapes of Viti Levu, Fiji, emphasizing their philosophy of taking life at a slower pace. Arriving on July 24, they have journeyed from Nadi to Sigatoka and Suva, eventually reaching Ovalau and completing a cycling tour around the island.

The couple, who have been cycle touring since their early 20s, shared their experiences, highlighting the importance of connecting with local communities and savoring traditional food. They faced challenges along their route, including rough roads and encounters with dogs. Their approach to navigating these difficulties has been marked by caution and attentiveness, pulling over when larger vehicles pass and remaining alert to potential hazards.

Park recounted her favorite cycling adventure, a year-long journey from Karachi, Pakistan to Singapore, while Flux particularly enjoyed his cycling experience in Iceland during summer. Their adventures extend beyond cycling; back in New Zealand, they maintain a 100-hectare organic farm where they have lived off the grid for three decades.

After leaving Ovalau, the couple continued their journey along the old Kings Highway, appreciative of the kindness they encountered from families along the way, especially in Namarai, where they were graciously hosted.

This narrative echoes the sentiments expressed by other travelers in Fiji, who have similarly embraced local culture and fostered positive connections with the community. For instance, travelers like Ana Gonzalez and David Cumming have also sought meaningful experiences in Fiji, emphasizing the importance of immersing themselves in local traditions and the impact of the Fijian community on their well-being.

As tourism in Fiji continues to thrive, the stories of Merryl and Ian serve as a reminder of the enriching experiences that come from exploring the world slowly and authentically, reinforcing the notion that slower travel allows for deeper cultural connections and lasting memories. Through their journeys, these travelers highlight the beauty of engaging with local cultures and the profound impact such experiences can have on both visitors and hosts alike.
