Motorists in Nadi are being urged to exercise caution and reduce their speed while driving on Queens Road, particularly in areas frequented by street dwellers. West Police Commander Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa highlighted this concern following reports of individuals begging in the middle of the road, notably near Prince Charles Park.
SSP Vaisewa emphasized the need for collaboration among relevant agencies to tackle the issue effectively, aiming to prevent potential road accidents. He noted that previous efforts to support begging individuals by returning them to their families had proven ineffective, as many returned to the streets shortly after.
Additionally, he warned that several of these individuals may be dealing with mental health challenges, which could impact their behavior. “Some of them wait for the traffic queue to engage in begging; you will notice them walking up and down the streets,” he remarked.
Vaisewa encouraged drivers to be vigilant and considerate when encountering them. “If they obstruct the road or commit an offense, then we will arrest them,” he added.
Despite attempts to reach out to Saliceni Raiwalui, chairperson of the Nadi board of special administrators, no comments were received regarding this issue.
This situation highlights the ongoing need for community support and social services to assist those in difficult circumstances. By promoting awareness and cooperation among agencies, positive change can be achieved, contributing to the safety and well-being of both the street dwellers and the motorists in the area.
In summary, police are advising caution to drivers in Nadi due to street dwellers begging in the road, emphasizing the need for local agencies to work together for a safer community.
