Labasa businesswoman Amelia Simmons has urged the business community in the Northern Division to prepare for the impending six-week closure of Labasa Airport. She emphasized the importance of planning ahead to minimize disruptions that this closure, set to run from February 16 to March 27, will cause.
Simmons acknowledged the necessity of the airport upgrades, stating, “I understand this has to be done. Safety comes first in ensuring the runway can support ATR 72 aircraft.” Her comments reflect a broader understanding among stakeholders regarding the critical need for robust airport infrastructure to ensure public safety and enhance travel capacity.
Last year, Fiji Airports officials engaged in consultations with various local stakeholders, including the Commissioner Northern’s office, the Labasa Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, and the Savusavu Tourism Association to discuss upcoming changes. Simmons, having participated in these crucial discussions, reiterated the importance of effectively navigating the airport’s temporary closure.
This proactive approach from the business community and local leaders highlights a collective commitment to safety and infrastructure improvements, ultimately benefiting the region in the long term.
