Six-Figure Secretariat Allowances Spark Debate at Fiji’s People’s Alliance AGM

The People’s Alliance party members raised concerns over the high secretariat allowances reported in the party’s financial statements for the previous year, which totaled $214,412. This expense was a topic of discussion during the party’s annual general meeting held yesterday at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.

During the meeting, party treasurer Keni Dakudreketi presented the financial report, prompting one member to question the justification for such a considerable expenditure and whether the work done by the party’s secretariat warranted the amount. General Secretary Sila Balawa clarified that the allowances in question were intended for party workers stationed at local branches across Fiji and insisted that he has been working on a volunteer basis since re-assuming his position.

“We pay them. We do not have campaign directors at the moment, so we work with these people at the secretariat,” Mr. Balawa explained. Dakudreketi further substantiated that the expenditures did not solely reflect payments for Balawa but also included the staff within the branches.

The meeting attracted significant attendance from party supporters, illustrating a continued commitment to transparency and engagement within PAP, despite the current financial scrutiny. The discussions demonstrated the party’s resolve to address financial management issues effectively.

As the People’s Alliance prepares for the upcoming 2026 General Elections, these conversations are critical. By fostering transparency and addressing accountability concerns, the party has the potential to strengthen its position and maintain support among its constituents. Engaging openly with supporters about financial matters not only enhances trust but can also serve as a foundation for future electoral success, highlighting a proactive approach to governance.
