Six families receiving social welfare support have been granted seed assistance as part of the Government’s Welfare Graduation Program, which focuses on helping families transition from welfare reliance to sustainable livelihoods. This initiative, totaling approximately $11,000, was facilitated by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, enabling participants to start or expand small businesses such as canteen operations, jewellery making, flower arrangements, frozen food sales, and small-scale farming.
The program is a testament to the Government’s commitment to empowering vulnerable families, allowing them to earn their own income and gradually reduce their dependence on social welfare. Director of Social Protection, Veremo Muria, oversaw the distribution of assistance in various communities, including Nasinu, Nalidi Village in Ra, Delasui Village, and others in Dawasamu and Verata.
During the handover events, Mr. Muria emphasized the program’s focus on fostering sustainable livelihoods rather than merely providing short-term relief. He highlighted the necessity of sound business practices, encouraging recipients to maintain clear distinctions between their business finances and their cultural or family obligations, as such entanglements can impact profitability and growth.
The recipients expressed enthusiasm about the support they received, perceiving it as a valuable opportunity to enhance their household income and secure a brighter future for their families. Many reported feeling motivated to grow their businesses further, aspiring to reduce their reliance on government assistance and achieve full self-sufficiency.
This initiative not only signifies a step toward self-reliance for these families but also reflects a broader commitment to transforming social safety nets into sustainable economic opportunities, ultimately fostering resilience within the community.
