A significant drug bust occurred early yesterday morning off the coast of Vatia, Tavua, leading to the seizure of over 100 sacks of suspected cocaine and the arrest of six individuals, including four foreigners believed to be from Ecuador. The operation has sparked investigations into unusual maritime activities that preceded the raid.
Rajeshwar Anand Kapoor, the caretaker of Vatia wharf, played a crucial role in identifying suspicious yachts and crews. He had repeatedly notified local police about the strange vessels anchoring far from the wharf. Kapoor noted that this behavior was not new; he had observed similar activities in the past and expressed his concerns about groups of men in the vicinity wearing thick cloths wrapped around their heads.
He shared that the situation escalated when police stopped his son at their home around 1am, which informed the family of the significant operation unfolding nearby. Following the raid, a strong police presence has been established at Ba Police Station, where the detained individuals and the confiscated drugs are being held.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that the successful operation was conducted by multiple law enforcement branches, including the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department (SOCID), and the Western Division Taskforce. The bust is being hailed as a product of effective collaboration between local and international law enforcement agencies, showcasing the ongoing commitment to combat drug trafficking in the region.
