Two sisters, Adi Nunia Talatoka and Makelesi Tikomainavualiku Kautoga, achieved a significant milestone on Wednesday by earning their Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine from Fiji National University. The graduation ceremony took place at the Fiji Vodafone Arena and was a proud moment not just for the sisters but for their entire family.
The sisters attributed their success to the sacrifices made by their parents and divine guidance. Adi Nunia, the elder sibling, completed her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in China, while Makelesi graduated from FNU in 2015.
Reflecting on their challenging journey, Makelesi expressed gratitude, stating, “It hasn’t been easy juggling work and studies, but we’re thankful to God for being the source of wisdom and knowledge throughout this journey.” Their accomplishment marks them as the first individuals in their extended family to achieve such postgraduate qualifications, and Makelesi hopes their success will inspire others to explore new fields.
Currently, both sisters practice at Aspen Medical in Lautoka, highlighting their dedication to patient care. “You have to be knowledgeable and compassionate to provide quality care daily,” Makelesi emphasized. Adi Nunia drew inspiration from her son, motivated by the struggles her parents faced for their family. “He’s my reason to push myself to the next level and set a benchmark for him to strive ahead,” she explained.
The sisters also acknowledged the support of experienced healthcare professionals and underscored the importance of perseverance. “While the course was challenging and time-consuming, anything is possible if you put your mind to it—especially when God is at the center of it all,” they affirmed.
