Two sisters, Adi Nunia Talatoka and Makelesi Tikomainavualiku Kautoga, celebrated an impressive accomplishment on Wednesday by receiving their Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine from Fiji National University. The graduation ceremony took place at the Fiji Vodafone Arena, marking a proud moment not only for the sisters but also for their entire family.
The sisters attribute their success to the sacrifices made by their parents and the guidance of God throughout their academic journey. Adi Nunia, the elder sister, undertook her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) studies in China, while Makelesi completed her MBBS at FNU in 2015. They reflected on their experiences, with Makelesi noting, “It hasn’t been easy juggling work and studies, but we’re thankful to God for being the source of wisdom and knowledge throughout this journey.”
Both sisters have achieved a first for their extended family, inspiring hopes for future generations. Makelesi expressed a desire for others to follow in their footsteps, perhaps in new fields of study. They are now practicing at Aspen Medical in Lautoka, driven by their dedication to patient care. Makelesi emphasized, “You have to be knowledgeable and compassionate to provide quality care daily.”
For Adi Nunia, her son serves as her biggest motivation. She shared, “I’ve seen the struggles my parents endured for me and my four siblings. I want to be a similar inspiration to others, especially my son. He’s my reason to push myself to the next level and set a benchmark for him to strive ahead.”
The sisters also expressed gratitude for the mentorship of senior healthcare professionals and stressed the importance of perseverance. They noted, “While the course was challenging and time-consuming, anything is possible if you put your mind to it—especially when God is at the centre of it all.”
This remarkable achievement not only highlights the dedication and hard work of Adi Nunia and Makelesi but also serves as an inspiration to many, proving that with determination and support, significant milestones can be reached. In a world where challenges abound, their story of resilience offers hope to others pursuing their dreams in the medical field.
