On Wednesday, two sisters, Adi Nunia Talatoka and Makelesi Tikomainavualiku Kautoga, celebrated a significant personal achievement by receiving their Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine from the Fiji National University. Their graduation ceremony took place at the Fiji Vodafone Arena, marking an important milestone for their family.
The sisters attribute their success to their parents’ sacrifices and divine guidance. Adi Nunia, the elder of the two, pursued her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in China, while Makelesi earned her MBBS from FNU in 2015. Reflecting on their journey, Makelesi expressed gratitude, saying, “It hasn’t been easy juggling work and studies, but we’re thankful to God for being the source of wisdom and knowledge throughout this journey.”
Both sisters take pride in being the first in their extended family to attain such qualifications. Makelesi shared her hope that their achievements would inspire others to pursue careers in new fields. Now, they are both practicing at Aspen Medical in Lautoka, motivated by their dedication to patient care. “You have to be knowledgeable and compassionate to provide quality care daily,” Makelesi noted.
For Adi Nunia, her son serves as her primary source of inspiration. She highlighted the challenges her parents faced to support her and her siblings, stating, “I want to be a similar inspiration to others, especially my son. He’s my reason to push myself to the next level and set a benchmark for him to strive ahead.”
Both sisters expressed their appreciation for the support from senior healthcare professionals and underscored the value of perseverance. They emphasized that while the course they completed was demanding and required a substantial time commitment, success is attainable through dedication, especially with God at the center of their efforts.
This story showcases the power of determination and familial support in achieving educational and professional goals. It serves as a reminder that with hard work and guidance, individuals can overcome challenges and inspire the next generation.
