Two sisters, Adi Nunia Talatoka and Makelesi Tikomainavualiku Kautoga, proudly celebrated a significant milestone on Wednesday as they graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine from the Fiji National University. The joyful graduation ceremony took place at the Fiji Vodafone Arena and serves as an inspiring moment for their family and community.
The sisters attribute their success to the sacrifices made by their parents and the guidance they’ve received from God. Adi Nunia, the elder sibling, completed her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in China, while Makelesi achieved her MBBS degree at FNU in 2015.
Reflecting on their arduous journey, Makelesi expressed gratitude for the strength their faith provided, stating, “It hasn’t been easy juggling work and studies, but we’re thankful to God for being the source of wisdom and knowledge throughout this journey.” The sisters have made history as the first in their extended family to reach such educational achievements, inspiring hopes for future generations to follow in their footsteps, particularly into new fields.
Now working at Aspen Medical in Lautoka, they are dedicated to providing compassionate patient care. Makelesi emphasized the importance of being knowledgeable and empathetic in their profession. For Adi Nunia, her greatest source of motivation comes from her son. She shared, “I’ve seen the struggles my parents endured for me and my four siblings. I want to be a similar inspiration to others, especially my son. He’s my reason to push myself to the next level and set a benchmark for him to strive ahead.”
The sisters acknowledge the pivotal role of senior healthcare professionals in their success and stress the importance of perseverance. They noted, “While the course was challenging and time-consuming, anything is possible if you put your mind to it—especially when God is at the center of it all.”
This achievement illustrates the power of determination and family support, creating a hopeful narrative for aspiring students in Fiji and beyond. The sisters’ story serves as a testament to the value of hard work, faith, and the drive to inspire others through personal achievements.
