Two sisters, Adi Nunia Talatoka and Makelesi Tikomainavualiku Kautoga, celebrated a tremendous accomplishment on Wednesday as they received their Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine from the Fiji National University. The graduation ceremony, held at the Fiji Vodafone Arena, was a significant milestone not only for the sisters but also for their family, marking a moment of pride and joy.

The sisters attributed their success to the sacrifices made by their parents and the guidance they received from God throughout their educational journey. Adi Nunia, the elder sister, pursued her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in China, while Makelesi completed her MBBS studies at FNU in 2015. Reflecting on their challenging path, Makelesi commented on the difficulty of balancing work and studies, expressing gratitude for divine support: “It hasn’t been easy juggling work and studies, but we’re thankful to God for being the source of wisdom and knowledge throughout this journey.”

As the first in their extended family to achieve such qualifications, both sisters hope their accomplishments inspire others to pursue new fields. They currently practice at Aspen Medical in Lautoka and are committed to delivering high-quality patient care. Makelesi emphasized the need for compassion and knowledge in their profession, stating, “You have to be knowledgeable and compassionate to provide quality care daily.”

For Adi Nunia, her son serves as her greatest inspiration. She shared the motivation derived from witnessing her parents’ struggles: “I want to be a similar inspiration to others, especially my son. He’s my reason to push myself to the next level and set a benchmark for him to strive ahead.”

The sisters are thankful for the mentorship received from senior healthcare professionals and stressed the importance of perseverance in their journey. They concluded their reflections by affirming, “While the course was challenging and time-consuming, anything is possible if you put your mind to it—especially when God is at the center of it all.”

This inspiring story of determination and familial support exemplifies how dedication and faith can lead to significant achievements. As the sisters embark on their new careers, they not only set a standard for themselves but also pave the way for future generations in their family and community.
