As the Women’s Rugby World Cup approaches later this month in England, the Fijiana XV team has garnered attention with the inclusion of two sets of sisters, the Railumu siblings—Adi Salaseini and Setaita—and the pairing of Keleni Marawa and Karalaini Naisewa. This heartwarming dynamic underscores the strong familial ties that are a hallmark of Fijian rugby culture.

Head coach Ioan Cunningham revealed the 32-member squad during a farewell dinner held in Nadi, praising the team’s mix of seasoned veterans and fresh talent. Leading the squad will be veteran eight Alfreda Fisher Maria, who has been entrusted with the captaincy, supported by familiar faces from the previous World Cup, including Karalaini Naisewa and Vika Matarugu.

New energy has been infused into the team with several uncapped players showing great promise in domestic competitions, such as Carletta Yee and Selai Grace Naliva. Additionally, four athletes who excelled in the Fijiana 7s have crossed over to bolster the XV side, including Ilisapeci Delaiwau and Mere Vocevoce.

The Fijiana XV is set to depart for England on Wednesday with their first match against Canada scheduled for August 23. This tournament not only aims to build on the team’s successes but also serves to inspire future generations of female rugby players throughout Fiji, marking a significant step forward for women’s rugby in the region.

The inspiring journeys of the Railumu sisters, who have dreamed of representing their country together, epitomize the dedication and determination that underpin their selection. This experience advocates for togetherness and encourages young athletes to follow in their footsteps, fostering hope and bolstering the sport’s growth.
