The Sinukakala women’s sevens team is gearing up for the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament, viewing it as a crucial opportunity for their players to gain valuable game experience. In a recent interview, Manageress Esther Koronavatu highlighted that the team has been training since November, primarily consisting of players from the Nasinu women’s provincial XV squad.

Koronavatu pointed out that the transition from 15-a-side to 7-a-side rugby is a smooth process for these athletes, many of whom have already played together and have experience in various other clubs. Although attendance at training has dipped due to preparations for the Christmas season, she remains optimistic about their performance.

“Our team has been performing strongly in the Under 20 Fiji Sports Council 7s series, reaching the finals consistently and securing victories against formidable opponents like the Seahawks,” she noted. The squad includes young talent aged around 20, all of whom are accustomed to high-intensity games and are committed to their training regimen at Albert Park, supplemented by gym sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Koronavatu outlined their ambitious goal of reaching the finals and capturing the women’s title, expressing respect for other teams while emphasizing their own hard work. She also mentioned the inclusion of experienced Fijiana representatives in their lineup, which she believes will be a significant advantage for the competition.

“The experience our players bring from the national team, combined with the teamwork they have developed over time, positions us well for the tournament,” she stated. Additionally, the presence of sports science students from Fiji National University further enhances their preparation efforts.

In summary, the Sinukakala women’s team is focused on utilizing the upcoming R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament to build on their strengths and gain essential experience, showing a promising outlook despite the competitive landscape they are entering.

This tournament could serve as a vital stepping stone for the development of these talented young players, ultimately contributing to the growth of women’s rugby in the region. Fans and supporters can remain hopeful for a strong performance from this determined team, showcasing their skills and teamwork.
