The Sinukakala women’s sevens rugby team is gearing up for the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament, viewing it as an important opportunity for their players to gain valuable match experience. This insight comes from team manager Esther Koronavatu, who shared her thoughts during an interview with SUNsports.

Koronavatu highlighted that the squad has been training collectively since November, primarily comprising members from the Nasinu women’s provincial XV team. This tournament marks a key transition for the players as they shift from the fifteens format to sevens. Many players have also competed in different clubs, contributing to their overall development.

Despite the festive season leading to a lower training attendance, Koronavatu expressed confidence in the team’s potential. She noted their strong performances in the under 20 Fiji Sports Council 7s series, where they reached the finals multiple times and secured victories against formidable opponents, including the Seahawks.

The team comprises young athletes, predominantly around the age of 20, who have been exposed to high-intensity matches regularly, with daily training sessions at Albert Park and gym workouts scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays. Koronavatu has set a goal for the team to qualify for the finals and clinch victory in the women’s category. She emphasized the importance of hard work and respect for all competing teams.

In addition, the presence of Fijiana representatives on the team is seen as a potential advantage in the upcoming tournament. The combination of youth and experience, along with contributions from sports science students from Fiji National University, enhances their competitive edge. New national representatives Silika Qalo and Sera Bolatini are also expected to play a significant role.

Overall, the Sinukakala women’s sevens team is approaching the tournament with enthusiasm and determination, aiming to showcase their skills and teamwork on the rugby field.

This article highlights the importance of developing young talent in sports and the commitment required to achieve success. It is encouraging to see initiatives that support women’s rugby and create opportunities for players to shine on a larger stage. The team’s focus on hard work and collaboration fosters a positive and hopeful outlook for their performance in the tournament.
