The Sinukakala women’s sevens rugby team plans to leverage the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament as an opportunity to gain valuable game experience for their players. Manageress Esther Koronavatu shared insights during an interview with SUNsports, emphasizing the team’s preparation and player dynamics.
Since November, the squad, primarily consisting of players from the Nasinu women’s provincial XV team, has been engaged in rigorous training. Koronavatu highlighted that the transition from traditional fifteens to the faster-paced sevens format has been smooth, as the players have developed camaraderie while also competing with other clubs.
However, Koronavatu acknowledged a decrease in training attendance due to the festive Christmas season. Despite this, she remains optimistic about the team’s potential, stating their solid performance in the under 20 Fiji Sports Council 7s series, where they consistently reached the finals and secured victories against well-known teams like the Seahawks.
The roster primarily features young athletes aged around 20, all competing at senior provincial levels. They maintain a disciplined training routine, including afternoon sessions at Albert Park and gym workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Koronavatu expressed ambition for the tournament, aiming for a final berth and a win in the women’s category. She respects the strength of other teams but remains committed to hard work in pursuit of their goal. The presence of experienced players from the national team, along with new representatives Silika Qalo and Sera Bolatini, adds an additional layer of skill to their lineup. Furthermore, the inclusion of sports science students from Fiji National University enhances their strategic approach for the season.
Overall, the Sinukakala women’s sevens team is gearing up with determination and a strategic mindset, hoping to harness their collective experience and youth to achieve great results in the upcoming tournament.
This initiative not only showcases the dedication of young athletes but also highlights the potential for growth in Fiji’s women’s rugby. As they prepare for the challenge ahead, the promise of developing talent within the sport is truly encouraging.
