The Sinukakala women’s sevens rugby team is gearing up for the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament, viewing it as an opportunity to give their players valuable game time. Manageress Esther Koronavatu recently discussed the team’s preparations and their transition from the fifteens format to sevens.

Having been training together since November, the team is largely comprised of members from the Nasinu women’s provincial XVs squad. Koronavatu noted that while the players have been able to build chemistry through their training, some have also been competing with other clubs.

However, the lead-up to Christmas has seen a dip in player attendance at training sessions. Despite this, Koronavatu remains optimistic, pointing to their strong performance in the under-20 Fiji Sports Council 7s series, where the team reached the finals and even claimed victories against more established teams like the Seahawks.

The squad mainly features youthful talent—most players are around 20 years old—who are no strangers to competitive play in the senior provincial circuit. They train regularly at Albert Park and incorporate gym sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Koronavatu expressed a clear goal for the tournament: to reach the finals and secure victory in the women’s category. Acknowledging the strength of other teams, she emphasized the importance of hard work and determination in achieving this objective.

The presence of current representatives from Fiji’s national team, coupled with the experience of younger players who have developed strong camaraderie over the seasons, is expected to be a significant advantage for Sinukakala. The involvement of sports science students from Fiji National University adds a fresh dynamic to their training, further enhancing their preparation for the upcoming tournament.

In summary, the Sinukakala women’s team is focused and determined as they approach the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament. With a blend of youthful energy and experienced players, they aim to make a strong impression and potentially clinch the title, showcasing their development and teamwork on the field. This tournament serves not only as a competitive platform but also as a stepping stone for future success in women’s rugby in Fiji.
