The Sinukakala women’s sevens team plans to leverage the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament as an opportunity for their players to gain valuable game experience. According to Manageress Esther Koronavatu, the team has been training together since November, composed primarily of players from the Nasinu women’s provincial XV’s team.
Koronavatu noted that the transition from fifteen-a-side to seven-a-side rugby is in progress, with players accustomed to collaborating, some also competing with other clubs. However, attendance at training has been lower than usual as many players are preoccupied with Christmas preparations. Despite this, Koronavatu expressed confidence in their abilities, highlighting their strong performance in the under 20 Fiji Sports Council 7s series, where they reached the finals multiple times and secured victories against formidable opponents like the Seahawks.
The squad, primarily consisting of talented young athletes around the age of 20, engages in high-intensity training sessions at Albert Park every afternoon, complemented by gym workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Their goal for the tournament is to qualify for the final and claim victory in the women’s category. Koronavatu emphasized that they respect the competition but remain focused on their objectives, bolstered by the presence of experienced players who have represented Fiji at the national level. Notably, national representatives Silika Qalo and Sera Bolatini have joined the team, enhancing its strength and depth.
This tournament represents a promising platform for growth and development for the Sinukakala team, and their preparation reflects a commitment to excellence. With a blend of youth and experience, they are poised to make a significant impact in the tournament.
In summary, the Sinukakala women’s sevens team is using the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament to gain critical playing experience, driven by a mix of young talent and seasoned national players. Their dedication to training and team cohesion suggests they have the potential to achieve great success in the competition.
