The Sinukakala Amazon women’s rugby team is set to make its debut in the senior division at the Fiji Bitter Labasa 7s tournament, commencing this Thursday and running through Saturday at Subrail Park. This significant milestone follows the team’s impressive track record in the Fiji Sports Council Under-20 7s tournaments, where they have consistently reached the finals.

Head coach Tomasi Katonivualiku expressed the excitement surrounding this new chapter for the team. “This is the first year our team is playing in the senior division after demonstrating strong performances in the Under-20 tournaments,” he stated. He noted that this tournament also marks the first time the team will travel to the North, heightening the enthusiasm among the players who previously competed solely in Viti Levu.

Katonivualiku mentioned that despite the youthfulness of the squad, they have prepared diligently with three weeks of training leading up to the tournament. He emphasized the importance of correcting past mistakes, saying, “We have to improve on our weaknesses from the last tournament.”

Beyond the competitive aspect, the coach highlighted the positive influence rugby has on the players’ lives. “Last year, most of the prize money we won was shared among all team members, which they took back to support their families,” he explained. “Engaging them in sports helps them stay away from drugs.”

As a native of Dreketi, Katonivualiku called upon local supporters to rally behind the team. “I urge all supporters in the North to come out in numbers and support us,” he encouraged.

In addition to Sinukakala, the EZERS women’s team will return to defend their title, with a strong lineup expected for the women’s competition, featuring teams such as the Vuna Sisters, Seahawks, Tagimoucia Ranadi, Lilian Amazons, Loloma Heights, and Kadavu Stallions.

With the tournament showcasing new talent and providing a platform for these athletes, it symbolizes hope and opportunity for the players both on and off the field.
