The Sinukakala women’s sevens rugby team is gearing up to utilize the upcoming R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament as an opportunity for their players to gain valuable game experience. In an interview with SUNsports, team manageress Esther Koronavatu shared insights into their preparations.

Koronavatu highlighted that the team has been training together since November, comprised largely of members from the Nasinu women’s provincial XV team. She explained that the transition from the fifteens format to sevens is underway, as many players have been competing with different clubs.

Acknowledging a decrease in training attendance due to the holiday season, Koronavatu remains optimistic about their performance. She noted their strong track record in the under 20 Fiji Sports Council 7s series, mentioning that they had reached the finals multiple times and won three matches against established teams like the Seahawks.

The squad mainly consists of young players around the age of 20 who have experience competing at a senior provincial level. Their training regimen includes high-intensity practices held at Albert Park, supplemented by gym sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Koronavatu expressed a clear goal for the tournament: to reach the finals and secure a victory in the women’s category. While recognizing the strength of their opponents, she emphasized their commitment to hard work and determination.

Among the team are national representatives such as Silika Qalo and Sera Bolatini, with Koronavatu believing that their experience will serve as an advantage in the upcoming competition. The addition of sports science students from Fiji National University further bolsters the team’s preparation for the season.

In summary, the Sinukakala women’s sevens team is looking forward to the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament, where they aim to showcase their skills and determination. With a young yet experienced squad and strong training efforts, they have the potential to make a significant impact in the tournament. The blend of youth and experience within the team fosters hope for a successful outing, reflecting the resilience and spirit of women’s rugby in Fiji.
