The Sinukakala women’s sevens rugby team is gearing up for the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament, focusing on giving their players valuable game experience. Manageress Esther Koronavatu shared insights about the team in an interview, emphasizing that they have been training together since November, transitioning from fifteens to sevens rugby. The team consists mainly of players from the Nasinu women’s provincial XV team, with some members also representing other clubs.

Koronavatu noted a decline in training attendance due to the holiday season, but she remains optimistic about the team’s potential. “We have the ability to do well as we have been performing admirably in the under 20 Fiji Sports Council 7s series, frequently reaching the finals and securing victories against well-known teams like the Seahawks,” she stated.

The team is primarily composed of young players, aged around 20, who compete at a senior provincial rugby level. They engage in daily high-intensity training sessions at Albert Park and attend gym workouts twice a week. Koronavatu aims for the team to reach the finals and clinch the women’s category trophy, recognizing the strength of their opponents while stressing a commitment to hard work.

“We have our Fijiana representatives, and we expect them to play this weekend,” Koronavatu added. She highlighted that many players possess national-level experience, considering this a significant advantage for the upcoming tournament. The inclusion of sports science students from the Fiji National University contributes positively to the team’s preparation.

The presence of new national representatives, such as Silika Qalo and Sera Bolatini, adds depth to the squad, further increasing hopes for success in the competition.

This article portrays the dedication and enthusiasm of the Sinukakala women’s sevens team as they seek to forge ahead, even amidst challenges. Their commitment, coupled with the young talent infused with experience, paints a picture of resilience and hope for future achievements in women’s rugby.

The team’s focus on development, both in player experience and teamwork, may lead to a promising performance in the tournament, inspiring not only their local community but also the future generation of female athletes.
