The Sinukakala women’s sevens rugby team is gearing up for the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament, using this opportunity to gain valuable game experience for their players. Manageress Esther Koronavatu shared insights about the team’s preparations and goal during a recent interview.

Koronavatu explained that the current team is primarily made up of players from the Nasinu women’s provincial XV’s team, who have been training together since November. This tournament serves as a transition from fifteens to sevens rugby, with some players having experience in various clubs as well.

Despite a dip in training attendance due to holiday preparations, Koronavatu expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform well, citing their success in the Under 20 Fiji Sports Council 7s series, where they reached the finals multiple times and secured victories against well-known teams like the Seahawks.

The squad features young athletes around the age of 20 who regularly participate in high-intensity matches. Their training sessions take place each afternoon at Albert Park, supplemented by gym workouts scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Koronavatu’s aspirations for the tournament are ambitious, as she hopes for the team to advance to the finals and claim victory in the women’s category. Acknowledging the strength of competing teams, she emphasized the importance of hard work and determination.

The inclusion of Fijiana representatives in the team, along with players who possess significant experience from national competitions, will be a pivotal factor in their performance. The addition of sports science students from Fiji National University further strengthens their lineup this season. Notable new national representatives, Silika Qalo and Sera Bolatini, are expected to contribute significantly to the team’s efforts in the tournament.

This tournament is not just about competition but also a valuable learning experience for young players, setting a positive tone for their future in rugby. The integration of experienced players and the guidance they provide can foster growth and resilience within the team, indicating a hopeful outlook for their journey ahead.

In summary, the Sinukakala women’s sevens team is determined to utilize the upcoming R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament as a platform for development and success, while emphasizing teamwork and perseverance.
