Authorities are actively responding to the situation involving the sunken MV Sullivan in Suva Harbour, where only light oil and fuel are leaking, according to Joeli Cawaki, CEO of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF). A team has been deployed to prevent the spread of the leakage.
Cawaki reassured that the situation is manageable, stating, “Fortunately, what is coming up is the light oil, light fuels. Once they come on the surface, they disseminate.” The team is equipped with absorbent materials and other resources to handle any variations in the oil density, should they encounter thicker substances.
To ensure safety, local mariners have been informed about ongoing clean-up efforts. Furthermore, water samples from the surrounding area have been sent to the Water Authority of Fiji for testing to monitor potential environmental impacts.
Cawaki emphasized community safety, urging residents from Navukavu and neighboring areas not to panic, as the situation is under control. “We are looking at taking out all the oil from this sunken vessel,” he added confidently.
The proactive measures being taken by MSAF highlight a commitment to environmental protection and community safety, offering reassurance to local residents that their health and the surrounding ecosystem are being closely monitored and safeguarded.
In summary, MSAF’s efforts reflect a strong response to manage the oil leak effectively while ensuring the safety of the local community. The collaborative approach with the Water Authority for testing water quality adds an additional layer of precaution to avoid any potential adverse effects. The swift action by the authorities is a positive sign in environmental management.
